Red Baraat - September 7th, 2016

Red Baraat
Wed Sep 7 2016 - 7:00 pm
CSPS Hall, 1103 Third St. SE, Cedar Rapids, 319-364-1580www.legionarts.org

$14 advance -- $17 door

Led by drummer Sunny Jain, Red Baraat melds the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangrawith brass funk, expressing the human spirit through improvisation and a powerful live sound. Comprised of dhol (a double-sided, barrel-shaped North Indian drum slung over one shoulder), percussion and horns, this NYC-based group plays fresh originals as well as traditional Punjabi songs and Bollywood numbers. Their stage presence is explosive, and the energy’s contagious.

Music Connection Magazine called Red Baraat’s music “…a raucous, blaring, clashing celebration of a multitude of cultures come together as one joyous explosion.”

Baraat is Hindi for a marriage procession. In North India, it is a tradition on the day of the wedding for the groom to travel to his bride’s home on a magnificently decorated horse, surrounded by an entourage of family and friends. Led by a dholi and/or a marching band, this joyous celebration naturally induces a riot of dancing and singing…much like a Red Baraat show.

Livewire, the band’s 2016 EP, is a 5-track scorcher recorded in-studio at Seattle’s KEXP. While still retaining many of the propulsive and uplifting musical elements that fired their previous albums, Livewire marks a departure for Red Baraat as their acoustic instrumentation evolves into new sonic spaces. Notably, the songs on the EP feature dark electric guitar textures and live effects processing from sousaphone and the dhol, the band’s signature instrument. The EP concludes with a bonus track (“Gaadi of Truth”) featuring the drumming and remixing talents of The Police’s Stewart Copeland.

Chorus Auditions

posted Aug 24, 2016, 11:56 AM by Friends of India Cedar Rapids - FOICR

Good Morning Friends of Orchestra Iowa School,

This is to let you know that chorus auditions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, August 31 and September 1, 2016 here at Orchestra Iowa School.  Come to the second floor to audition.  It only takes a few minutes once you complete the paperwork.  Stop by between the hours of 4 and 5:30 p.m.

Harmony Chorus is for students in Kindergarten and First Grade.  Students audition by singing “Happy Birthday.”

Odyssey Chorus is for students in 2nd and 3rd grade.  Students audition by singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”

Discovery Chorus is for students in 4th-6th grades.  Students audition by singing “America the Beautiful.”

Frequently asked questions about the auditions:

Do I need an appointment to audition?

No.  It’s first come/first served.

Do I need to stay the entire 90 minutes?

No.  Once you have been heard you may leave.

Does my child have to know all the lyrics to the song?

No.  A lyrics sheet is generally available to the student.  However, if they do not know the song they can ask to sing something else.  The teacher is looking for qualities that can be exhibited with other pieces more familiar to the student.

Do I need to pay for the program when I audition?

No.  After auditioning Harmony and Odyssey students are given registration paperwork which may be filled out on the spot or may be taken home and completed later.  Registration paperwork is mailed to Discovery students.

How well does my child have to sing?

We are not looking for trained singers.  A student should be able to carry a tune, do some simple pitch matching, and exhibit a willingness to sing with a group.  Nearly all of the auditioning singers for Harmony and Odyssey are accepted.  Discovery is slightly more selective, but approximately 90% (and more) of the students auditioning for Discovery will be accepted.

What is the total cost of the program?

For students taking the program for the first time (including registration fee and uniform)

For Harmony, $150

For Odyssey:  $210

For Discovery:  $215

Payments are available on request by an automatic withdrawal process.
